Filipino Ex-Sex Slaves Demand More Compensation from Japan

Some 20 elderly Filipino women who were forced to work as sex slaves for jpanese soldiers during World War II protested Thursday outside the Japanese embassy in Manila, demanding apology and more cash compensation from the Japanese government.
목요일 마닐라의 일본대사관 앞에서는 2차대전 중 강제로 일본군의 성적노예가 될 수 밖에 없었던 20명의 필리핀 여성들이 일본정부의 사과와 금전적 보상을 요구하는 시위가 있었다.
Some of the former "comfort women" wore black and hoisted banners calling on japan to apologize for war atrocities. They urged the immediate enactment of a compensation bill pending in the Japanese Diet (Parliament).
전 종군 위안부 여성중 몇 명은 검은 옷을 입고 일본의 전쟁범죄에 대한 사과를 요구하는 현수막을 들었다. 그들은 일본의회의 심리중에 있는 보상법의 시급한 입법화를 요구했다.
"We call on the Japanese to pass this bill into a law immediately. We are old and many of us are sickly," said Narcisa Claveria, 73, a leader of Lila Pilipina, a group representing comfort women.

Lila Pilipina said about 33 former Philippine sex slaves have already died of old age without getting compensation. It now represents about 170 elderly Filipino women in a lawsuit against the Japanese government.

The group has rejected a Japanese-financed Asian Women's Fund for former sex sslaves in the region, viewing it as "atonement money" that did not oblige Tokyo to take a formal apology.

"This does not absolve the Japanese government of their legal responsibilities," a Lila Pilipina member stressed.

On Monday, Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi caused widespread indignation when he visited a shrine honoring Japanese soldiers, including those executed for war crimes.
