Officials and civic groups for women`s rights marked International Women`s Day here yesterday with various events and campaigns. The North also recognized the occasion.
Uri Party lawmaker Lee Kyung-sook released a survey showing that the low birthrate and aging population are key women`s issues pending on the legislative agenda here this year.
Civic groups promoting women`s rights and gender equality, including Korea Women`s Associations United, Seoul Women`s Hotline and Korean Women Link, held exhibitions and campaigns to prevent sexual harassment.
KWAU is also hosting a "culture sharing campaign" through March 10.
Women`s rights groups in North and South Korea planned a joint statement reported to say that unification will be advanced through women`s empowerment.
North Korea held a ceremony in Pyongyang for International Women`s Day and asked women for productivity and to be loyal to leader Kim Jong-il, Yonhap news agency reported.
International organizations also celebrated the day, which was first declared by the Socialist Party of America on Feb. 28, 1909. The March 8 date was set during the 1910 Socialist International meeting in Copenhagen, and was declared an international day in 1975 by the United Nations.
The day, which was designated as a holiday for the United Nations and many countries including China and Russia, is associated particularly with working women since it stemmed from the movement for women`s suffrage and equal opportunity rights in employment.
The United Nations is holding a session of the U.N. commission on the Status of Women through March 11, with ministers from over 80 countries and 6,000 human rights activists from across the world.
To coincide with the session, a global campaign has been launched to bring justice for "comfort women," who were conscripted from Asian countries such as Korea, China, Taiwan and Philippines as sexual slaves for the Japanese military during World War II.
The U.N. Development Fund for Women held a commemorative event concentrating on development and human rights under the slogan "Celebrating Our Gains, Accelerating Change," while the International Labor Organization hosted the second International Film Festival in Geneva through March 10. The festival offers a series of films directed by women looking into social issues such as gender equality and the role of women.
